6-Trait Writing
Eisenhower uses several strategies to encourage student writing. Teachers have received training and are familiar with many ways to help students produce writing samples. The Six-Trait Writing Framework is a strategy that helps kids work through the writing process and allows them to assess their work based on a rubric. The rubric rates the students on a scale from 1 to 5 on how well the writing meets the criteria for each trait. The six-traits are:
1. IDEAS
Ideas in writing should be the main idea stated in a way so that the message, theme, or the story line is clear to the reader. The ideas offer information reinforced by important and carefully chosen details.
2. ORGANIZATION
This refers to how a piece of writing is structured and ordered. The writing should have a flow from beginning, to middle, to end. The writing should have inviting leads and meaningful conclusions that flow logically and smoothly as the reader is reading. It should not leave the reader confused or needing explanation.
3. VOICE
This is the personality of the paper, the chance for the spirit of the writer to shine. Voice is where the student can incorporate their own style and personality into their writing through words. It is also incorporates informational needs with the interests of the audience.
4. WORD CHOICE
This trait focuses on the student's ability to choose words which help get the meaning across to the reader. It includes the use of phrasing, descriptive words, and the students' language to help paint a picture for the reader.
5. SENTENCE FLUENCY
Sentence fluency is the flow of the paper, the cadence, and the rhythm of the writing. The students should be using sentence that very in length, as well as structure.
6. CONVENTIONS
Spelling, grammar usage, capitalization, paragraph indentation, and punctuation are included in checking the paper for editorial correctness. This is the attention-to-detail polishes the piece off for the reader.
The Accelerated Reader Program, AR, is a computerized reading program used to improve students’ reading ability by increasing reading practice and motivating students to read more books. Students select a book at their individual reading level. After they read an AR book, they take a computerized quiz over the book. Their goal is to get an 80% or higher on the test. Points are earned based on the length and difficulty of the book and how well the student did on the quiz. Teachers help students set a nine week AR Goal. A celebration is held at the end of the nine weeks for those who make their goal.
We have six, fifth grade students at Eisenhower who have been selected to sing in the North Central Honor Choir. This honor choir consists of fifth and sixth grade students from north central Kansas who have been chosen by their music teacher. Since the beginning of January, the seven Eisenhower students have been coming to the music room from 8:00-8:25 a.m. Monday through Friday to rehearse for this concert. There are five songs and all the songs have to be memorized for the concert. These students are so dedicated in doing a good job that they have volunteered to come-in for extra rehearsals during their lunch recesses a few times per week.
Substance Abuse Prevention Team-This is a volunteer group of staff members know as SAPT. The mission of this active team is to promote positive alternatives to drugs. Some of the events they sponsor throughout the year are participation in the high school homecoming parade in the fall, the annual Thanksgiving Banquet, The Giving Tree in December and the Talent Show portion of the Family Block Party in May. In addition they work with the PTA to assist with some of the other family events such as the Family Chili/Bingo Night and the Overnighter. This team is always willing and ready to come to the call to promote our abstinence motto “Eagles Fly High and do it Drug Free”.
The Eisenhower Student Advisory Council (SAC) is made up of a group of elected class representatives from each grade level who help represent and make improvements in our school. Each fall 4th and 5th grade students are encouraged to campaign to become our school’s president, vice president, and secretary. To be eligible to be a SAC representative you must be responsible, have good grades, and show good behavior at school.
SAC meets once a month to make improvements in our school and increase school pride and spirit. A few of the activities that SAC has been involved in this year include creating holiday treat bags, promoting Veterans Day, cleaning up litter on our playground, and inventing new wacky costume ideas for Eisenhower Spirit Fridays. Our most successful event this year is our Pennies for Patients Fundraiser. We collected over $1,000 to donate to children with Leukemia.
Math Club started in 2001 to give students that love Math an opportunity to explore math games and activities. It is open to all 3rd, 4th and 5th grade student enrolled in our school. Most Tuesday’s from 3:30-4:30 we meet in the school Media Center or Computer Lab to enjoy math together. This year there are about 60 students most of the time. Parents are welcome to come for a visit. Just call Mrs. Boller anytime to join the fun.
Science Club is for third through fifth grade students who want to learn more about the world of science. Science Club was created to enhance students’ science knowledge, conduct hands-on experiments, and, of course, get messy! In addition to having fun, students learn about the physical and chemical properties of science.
CCLC stands for 21st Century Community Learning Centers. It is a state funded program to assist students in grades 3, 4 and 5. The programs is geared mostly toward reading and math. We have 31 students enrolled in the program, 1 site coordinator, 1 activity director, 5 certified teachers, 5 paraprofessionals and 5 high school students.
Eisenhower Recorder Consort is a recorder group for those students in fourth and fifth grades who would like the opportunity to play more on their recorder. The group will start in February and meet once a week on Wednesday mornings. This group plays on the talent show for Eisenhower’s Block Party plus they will be featured in the music program on April 25th.
Site Councils in the district began to be formed during the school year of 1991-1992 with selection of the initial members and training. Since that time the Eisenhower Elementary Site Council has continued to meet and share the vision and growth of our school. We meet seven times during the school year and there are typically eight parents and community members along with the two team leaders, a representative from the central office and the principal. The team reviews information about student progress and teacher training. The team meets on Monday’s at 5:30 p.m. and you may call the school for specific dates. (785-717-4340) Current members are Ken Wisby, Chairman; Natalie Frakes, Vice-Chariman; Phyllis Love, secretary; and members Christopher Whitfield, Jennifer Berggren, Herman Simmons, Sharon Bloomdahl, Vaughn DeGuzman, Kathie Graham; Team Leaders Karen Malec and Lynn Inkman; Central Office Representative Ricardo Vieyra and principal Susan Kamphaus.
Writing Club is for fourth and fifth grade students who love to write. In writing club, students are able to enhance their own writing, create creative fiction and nonfiction pieces, and publish their work on the Internet. Students also have the opportunity to meet real authors and learn new strategies for improving their writing.
